The primary function of the Communications Department is the dispatching of emergency services for all of Barton County.  The Communications Department provides emergency dispatching services for the Barton County Sheriff's Department; the Police Departments of Claflin, Ellinwood, Great Bend, Hoisington and Pawnee Rock; the Kansas Highway Patrol and all fire departments and emergency medical services in the County.  The Communications Department also dispatches for Kansas Wildlife and Parks, Central Kansas Community Corrections and Juvenile Services.  Barton County Communications is the public safety answering point for all of Barton County for enhanced 911.

Dispatchers are on-duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week to assist the public.  In addition to providing emergency services, the 911 dispatchers will provide the public with 911 address \ locator number when building or moving to a new area.

Addressing was established in the 1980's through a mapping system.  The County is divided into a series of roads and avenues.  Structures are numbered accordingly along said roads.  911 locator addresses are required under County Resolution 1990-12.  It is suggested that be placed near the entrance of a residence and that reflective numbering, at least 3 inches in height, be used.

Email has become a regular means of communication.  While the County urges you to contact officials with questions, Open Records Requests should be made via the telephone or in person.  We ask that citizens remember that email is normally monitored during regular office hours.  However, training and other scheduled events often take personnel away from immediate access to their email accounts.
