Ellinwood, established in
1872 as a town site near
the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad, is today a thriving community of
3100 people. The architecture of this community reflects the
German-Austrian heritage of many of the early immigrants. Visitors and
residents alike enjoy strolling the brick-paved streets and viewing the parks,
beautiful churches, and historic downtown with antique stores. Ellinwood
also boasts a unique feature--underground shops connected by a series of
tunnels. These shops date from the earliest days of the city and at one
time ran throughout the entire business district. Part of the tunnels and
shops are open to visitors and tours are conducted on a regular basis.
Year around walking activities are available with an excellent track at the City
Park on the northwest side of Ellinwood, as well as a golf course,
swimming pool, archery range, ball fields, tennis courts, and fishing at
Wolf Pond. Concerts and community activities are held throughout the
year at the downtown Wolf Park and Band Shell.
The
Ellinwood After-Harvest Festival is held the third weekend in July with
a parade, dances, 3 on 3 basketball
tournament, class reunions, and a variety of family activities.
Everyone is invited to enjoy the ambiance and charm of this unique
central Kansas small town.
