| In 2003 the Barton
County Sheriff’s Office saw the need to develop a youth
program for younger kids ages 11 through 14 that would
provide hands-on experiences that are challenging,
thought provoking, and essential in their development.
This program, geared much like the Explorer Program but
in an Acedemy setting, gives younger kids a taste of
what local law enforcement does in their community and
builds a better relationship and understanding between
our youth and law enforcement. This 3-day program is
offered to Barton County youth over the summer months of
June and July and is usually presented in two separate
sessions. While at the Acedemy, Cadets learn about
firearms and firearm safety, police pursuits, K-9 use,
and severe weather to name a few. Cadets also get to
investigate a mock crime scene, using real investigative
techniques. These sessions are limited to the number of
youth that can attend and are selected by the various
schools in the community for maximum exposure to this
program. |
