Rising like a phoenix from ashes, Hoisington has
steadily recovered from a devastating tornado in the spring of 2001. Much
of a western housing area, the parks, the high school, and Clara Barton Hospital
were either destroyed or heavily damaged. Today, thanks to thousands of
volunteers and the efforts of local citizens and government, the school, parks,
hospital, and housing area have been repaired and rebuilt. Part of the
work done includes the rebuilding and renovation of park facilities on the
western edge of the city. Bicentennial Park now includes a concrete
walking path, picnic shelters, a new playground for children, ball parks and
grandstands, the city swimming pool and bathhouse, and new tennis courts.
The park has long been a favorite summer activity center for the citizens of
Hoisington and it is now better than ever.
