Barton County invests in growth, and does so to encourage a diverse economy. Barton County’s economy is based upon agriculture, oil, manufacturing, retail and medicine. In addition to encouraging these economic sectors, Barton County invests in its unique natural heritage – the Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Refuge. The County was instrumental in developing the Wetlands and Wildlife National Scenic Byway, and in conjunction with the Byway partners, continues to invest in growing the Byway. Barton County offers a strong economy along with hunting, fishing, birding, and other recreational opportunities. The Kansas Wetlands Education Center, located east of Cheyenne Bottoms, provides interpretation regarding wetlands, interactive exhibits, education programs, and other opportunities.

The cities of Great Bend, Hoisington, Ellinwood, and Claflin work cooperatively with each other and with Barton County to encourage economic development in Barton County. The Kansas Department of Commerce is frequently a partner with the local communities to enhance economic development.

Barton County is blessed with outstanding local schools. Barton County Community College provides affordable, quality post- secondary education.
