Floodplain Regulations

Barton County actively participates in the National Flood Insurance Program which means that for our county residents to be eligible for flood insurance as well as government aid in the event of a natural disaster the County must enforce the floodplain requirements that FEMA has established.

You are welcome to review Resolution 2013-17, Amending 2009-21 which was last updated by Barton County on July 29, 2013.

The purposes of enforcing floodplain regulations is to promote the public health, safety, and general welfare, and to minimize flood losses by applying provisions designed to:

*    Restrict or prohibit uses which are dangerous to health, safety or property in times of flood or cause undue increases in flood heights or velocities.

*    Require that uses vulnerable to floods, including public facilities which serve such uses, be provided with flood protection at the time of initial construction.

*    Protect individuals from buying lands which are unsuited for intended purposes because of flood hazard.

Most of the forms that you will need are listed below for your convenience.

You are encouraged to call and visit with our staff for specific questions and for direction on where to begin the compliance process.

Please also keep in mind that Barton County has Zoning Regulations which require building permits so if the property you wish to develop is in the floodplain, then the floodplain compliance process must be handled prior to any building permits being issued.  Please refer to the "Zoning Regulations" tab for more information relating to these requirements.
