Mattress Recycling

Customers can bring out their old, worn out mattresses and box springs to the Landfill (fees apply).  The mattresses are then loaded onto a roll-off truck and hauled to Hutchinson Correction Facility, located in Hutchinson Kansas.  The inmates at HCF dismantle the mattresses and box springs, and separate the recyclable materials.  From these materials the inmates make unfinished & finished outdoor furniture, chicken coops, utility sheds, and kennels for the public to purchase.

Why Recycle Mattresses?

•Mattresses take up to 23 cubic feet of space each.  If you multiply this by the more than 300 mattresses tossed daily, that’s a lot of waste occurring at high volumes.

•Mattresses are difficult to breakdown because of the way they are manufactured.  Their bulkiness and metal springs have a history of causing damage to landfill machinery.

•90% of the materials in mattresses can be recycled.

*Metal springs are melted down and sold to steel companies

*The cotton and foam can be used for carpet bagging or insulation.

*The wood is commonly sold to wood chippers or burnt for fuel.
